You lady, are the reason I write books!

Many moons ago, I read a Milly Johnson book called A Spring Affair. I was at a time in my life when I was struggling with lots of things and it really resonated with me. So a Sunday morning, I wrote to the author telling her why and thanked her for writing it because it inspired me to do something hugely life-changing.

I never thought for one minute that I would get a response. She was an author after all. A famous person. She wouldn’t have the time to write to a reader. However, within one hour, she had written back and her first words, which I’ll never forget were “you lady, are the reason I write books.”

It’s something I mention whenever I’m talking to people who write, whether it be in a one-to-one chat or in a group setting where I’m doing a talk.

Over the years, I’ve had some amazing messages from readers, telling me about how my books have made a difference to them in one way or another and it’s so motivating, so encouraging, and so inspirational.

This morning I woke up to a message to a reader, who had taken the time to get in touch and say that she’d read my first book Amazing Grace and how it had resonated with her and she thanked me for writing it. She told me a little more about her recent story and it really warmed my heart to know that something I’d written had helped her through some tough times.

I’m a big believer in some books finding you at the time you need them to. I wonder if this has happened to you. Would love to hear about it if it has.

In a world where you try so hard but sometimes can’t help but compare yourself to others, you don’t know what it means to get a message from a reader like this. It’s not about how many copies you’ve sold, or how high up the charts your books go, or how many people come to an event to see you. It’s about this!

To use Milly’s words

“Nina,

Thank you so very much for taking time out to write to me today.

You lady, are the reason I write books!
